What are the rotational speed and feed rate of a welding milling cutter?

2025-10-29

In metalworking, welding milling cutters are commonly used tools. Proper selection of their rotational speed and feed rate directly impacts work efficiency, part quality, and tool life. Below, Zhongyeda's editor explains these two critical parameters in simple terms.

First, rotational speed refers to the number of revolutions the milling cutter makes per minute, such as “2000 RPM.” Selecting the rotational speed requires consideration of the part material (e.g., aluminum differs from steel), tool material, tool size, and the desired level of machining precision.

Generally, smaller tools require higher rotational speeds. Machining softer materials like aluminum also necessitates higher rotational speeds.

Next, feed rate refers to the relative movement speed between the part and the tool. Commonly expressed in three ways: how many millimeters the tool moves per revolution, how much it moves per cutting edge engagement, or the total movement per minute.

Choosing the right feed rate affects the part's surface finish and can accelerate wear on welded milling cutters.

SPM and feed rate must be considered together, not in isolation. If the cutter spins too fast but moves too slowly, tool damage is likely. Conversely, moving too fast with insufficient rotation may deform the part or even ruin the tool.

In practice, when machining hard materials like stainless steel, use a slower rotation speed with a moderate feed rate. For soft materials like aluminum, opt for a faster rotation speed and a higher feed rate.

That concludes today's sharing. Many modern machines now automatically recommend optimal speeds and feeds, reducing reliance on pure experience.

In short, the two parameters of the welding milling cutter selected, well adjusted, work fast and good, but also save costs, which is an important skill of the metal processing master.
